The Gingerbread Man Was On the Run!

We went on a gingerbread treasure hunt!  We had to scan the clues using the iPad.  The clues were in a QR code! We scanned the QR code and a message popped up.  The message told us to go to the bootroom, the Learning Commons, the kindergarten hallway, the music room and the office!  When we got to the office, the clue told us to go back to the beginning.  We got back to the classroom but the gingerbread man was GONE but he left us some cookies!  We decorated them with candies and ATE them up!

Tomorrow is Pajama Day!  Remember to wear your favourite pjs!

3-d Elves and Shapes

3-D Elves

We made 3-d elves with boxes.  It was a classroom full of elves!  We used squares, spheres, rectangles, circles, cylinders and rectangular prisms.  We stuck them together with tape.  Some people used Christmas spirit when creating their elf.  Some of us synergized and helped each other tape our elves.

We went down to the gym to do some Christmas caroling with the WHOLE school!  It was fun.

An Old-Fashioned Christmas!

We went to the Highwood Museum. Years ago, people hung candles on the Christmas tree.  They had to be careful because they tried not to burn themselves or the tree!  In the old days, they hung socks and Santa would put an orange in the toe, if you were lucky!  We made a craft candy cane out of paper and crayons. The Highwood Museum has an old journal from a girl from the 1880s.

We played at the museum in the play area.  We sang Jingle Bells with bells and we read the book A Porcupine in a Pine Tree.

Letter to Santa

Mrs. Saunderson made a copy of our letter to Santa.  We put it in our Take Home Folder for us to read to you!

Have a great weekend.  See you Monday!

We need to wear a Santa hat on Monday IF we have one!  I can't tell you why.....

Old Fashioned Christmas

We will be learning about an old fashioned Christmas.  Some kids interviewed their parents.  We found out that parents and grandparents got toys too when they were in Grade 1.  The toys were a little different.  Ms. Mahan's class made acrobat toys that balanced on their finger!

Christmas Concerts

We watched the Gr. 3-5 concert this afternoon.  The kids talked with a western accent.  It was funny!  Someone was dressed up like Santa Claus.  People were dressed up really funny.  The concert was very funny.  People were dressed up in disguises.
After the performance, we had a GoNoodle because we were sitting a LONG time.
We have been counting a lot by 5s.  We are getting pretty good at it.  We can count by 10s to 100.  We made some reindeers and Christmas trees out of shapes.  We even made giant elves of ourselves.  They are in the hallway.

No school for students on Friday!

I am a great learner!

The Learner Profile is coming home tonight.  Please READ it with me.  When we are done, we need to return the folder and the envelope.

Our Christmas concert on Monday night is almost FULL to capacity.  If you have EXTRA tickets, please send them back to school.  We need to wear sunglasses and reindeer antlers if we have them.

We had an assembly today.  We learned about Habit 1 & 2.  We synergized with the big kids!  We talked about what a 7 Habits school feels like, looks like and sounds like!  We said some really great stuff - Mrs. Saunderson was impressed.

Ask me about Random Acts of Christmas Kindness!  Today we gave someone a compliment!

Remember that I need to interview someone about Grade 1 past and bring in my field trip forms.

12 Days of Fitness

We have been doing the 12 days of Fitness!  Every day we do a new exercise.  On the first day, we did a high 5, on the second day we did 2 toe touches, on the third day we did 3 muscle poses!  We head down the hallway to the grade 2 and 3 wing!
Please remember to send the field trip note back to school.  Remember I need sunglasses and a reindeer hat for the concert on Monday!

Shapes, shapes, shapes!

2D reindeer peeking in a window!
We are learning about shapes.  There are two different kinds of shapes.  There are 2D and 3D shapes.  2D are flat and 3D are fat!

This afternoon we had a lockdown.  In 1S we had to be quiet and sit down in the corner so no one could find us and Mrs. Saunderson could type.  We know that a lockdown could happen if there was a dangerous animal on the playground or a sick person in the hallway or even a bad guy.

A field trip note is coming home.  Please help me interview someone special about traditions.

Important notes went home today about the events in December.  Some had Christmas concert tickets sent home as well.  Please check your child's Take Home Folder.

In order for any Scholastic books to be here in time for Christmas, the order is due on FRIDAY.  We know that this is a quick turn around but we would like books here before break.

The Gingerbread Boy

We are beginning Gingerbread Boy week! The gingerbread boy story that we read today had a little old woman and a little old man and a fox.  We are going to read a lot of different gingerbread stories.

We learned about shades and highlighting using paints and colours.  To make a shade you need to mix black.  To make a highlight you need to use white.  We painted a night sky.

For the concert, we should wear reindeer antlers and sunglasses, if we have them.

How To Writing with Bubblegum!!!

How To Blow a Bubble
We learned how to blow a bubble today.  We tried it with gum and some of us could make a bubble and some of us couldn't.  First, we told Mrs. Saunderson how to blow a bubble and when we said blow, she blew her gum across the classroom. We forgot to tell her to keep it in her mouth and not blow too hard!

We decided the instructions for how to blow a bubble are this:

1. First, you put the gum in your mouth and chew it a lot.
2.  Next, flatten the gum and wrap it around your tongue.
3. Last, you blow very smoothly.

Then we did some writing and blew up a balloon to look like gum.  We put it on our picture.

Please remember to write your child's name in ALL their winter belongings.  We have had quite a few incidents of missing boots!

November 24, 2015

Painting, painting, painting

We have been painting a lot.  We had to disguise a hat today.  We painted different items to see what sticks best. We tried paper, plastic, tinfoil and cardboard.  Some thought the cardboard was the best and some thought the tinfoil was the best.

We met Mark today!  He brought his mom a coffee!

50s Day is Here!

Today was the 50th day of school!  We all got to have root beer floats.  Some people had never had a root beer float before!  12 people liked the float!  We made some records and counted less than 50 and greater than 50.  We also did a 50s movement video.  We danced like we were at a sock hop!  We had to sort some pictures that showed Then and Now.  Barbie was a tricky picture because we had an old Barbie and a new Barbie!  The clothes and the shoes  were also tricky to sort.

We also had cupcakes for a special birthday in our class!

Remember to order your ART CARDS by November 26!

November 18, 2015

Tomorrow is 50s Day!

Tomorrow is 50s day.  It is a birthday in our class, too!  We could dress up like 1950s people.  We could wear jeans, white shirts, and skirts.  Some of us may even bring extra clothes to share.  We are having 1950s day because we have been together for 50 days!  It is a special day in Grade 1.  It is a Zero the Hero day.

On Go Noodle, we have a new character.  His name is Blob Ross.

If you are ordering an Art Card, please return by November 25.

Art Cards

Our art cards came home today!  One of our art projects has been designing a Christmas card for family.  We colored and painted our designs on the special paper and Mrs. Saunderson sent it away to get printed.  They are here!  Parents have an opportunity to order the cards and the classroom gets a percentage of the sales.  We plan to use this as a fundraiser to support our field trips.  Enjoy the cards. We think they turned out awesome!

50s day is on Thursday - dress up like the 50s!  Art card order is due by November 26.

November 13, 2015

Transparent and Opaque

We painted on watercolour paper.  We are using Mondrian's painting idea.  We mixed the primary colours.  We used medicine droppers to mix the paints.

We also looked at stuff to see if they were see through or not.  Opaque means you can't see through it.  Transparent means you can see through it.  Transparent can be glass, the clock cover or soap.  Opaque can be a book, milk, or paint.   Our friends are Timmy Transparent and Ollie Opaque.  They were puppets to help us learn.

Happy Weekend, everyone!

Remembrance Day assembly

Click the link below to watch our video!

At the Remembrance Day assembly, there were wreaths.  The wreath bearers got to show off the wreaths to everyone.  The Grade 5 Student Council hosted the assembly.  They showed our video at the assembly. There was a war hero there.  He talked about people that died in war but he also talked about Afghanistan.  He told us that he was an engineer in the army.  He told us about a 7 year old in Afghanistan who lost his dad and then he had to go to work!  WE are not ready to go to work!  We are lucky to live in Canada!

No school tomorrow!  See you Thursday.

Mixing Playdough

November 11 is Remembrance Day
Today we talked playdough!  We all got our own little container.  We traded part of the playdough colours.  We mixed our playdough colours and they turned different colours! .  We even get to take the playdough home.  BUT Mrs. Saunderson says we have to make some sight words with the playdough!

Tomorrow is our Remembrance Day ceremony.  If we wear a uniform to Sparks or Scouts, please wear it to the assembly.  It will be a quiet and respectful ceremony. Assembly begins at 10:30 am.  Please join us.

Brooklynn lost a tooth today!

Book order is due on Friday, November 13.

Mixing Colours!

Will water walk across to the other jars?

Look what happened!  We made new colours!
In science, we painted mice and mixed up colours.  We read a book called Mouse Paint. In our science experiment, we made water walk to change colours.  The empty jars filled up with new colours.
Luke ran the calendar.  We know tomorrow will be a Zero the Hero Day because we will have been in school for 40 days.
In math, we did Mathletics.  We also did 'before and after' numbers.  Ask me what number comes before 15 or what number comes after 11.  We used a number line to count to 20.
We had a lake walk for gym.

November 02, 2015

Primary Colours!

We learned about primary colours.  They are red, yellow, blue.  Primary colour means that no other colour can make red, yellow or blue.  Primary colours can make other colours.  Red and blue makes purple.  Blue and yellow make green.  Yellow and red make orange.  We mixed all those colours together.  All of the primary colours mixed together make black.

We are starting to read a book about a pig.  The book is Charlotte's Web.  We think that there is a spider in it too.  The pig's name is Wilbur.

Happy Halloween!

Treats from a classmate!

The Witch's Run!
We had a great day at school!  We shared snacks with friends, watched a play by the high school students, had a school parade AND Halloween centers!  Wow - we were busy!  We loved the Scavenger Hunt and we liked carrying 'eyeballs' on a spoon.  It was fun to dress up Grade 5s like mummies with toilet paper.

Have a safe Halloween night!

Remember that Monday's morning snack should still be a 'Brain Food'.  Candy treats can be for a lunch dessert.

October 29, 2015

Food Bank

Remember to help the We School students and bring a food bank item!
1 more day until the Halloween parade!  If you need special face paint or hair, please wear it in the morning.  We will wear our costumes after lunch.  We will go trick or treating on Saturday.

Can I bring an item for the food bank?  Madame Polege and the WE school are collecting items for the food bank.

We have a new Leader of the Week.

Pumpkin Carving Day

Voter turn out was 100%!

Serious consideration!

This pumpkin measured 5 cubes high!

The results are in!!!!  We tallied and counted.  The most votes were scary eyes, triangle nose, sharp teeth mouth!

The day started with Mrs. Q-W!  We had a class vote on our pumpkin face.  We had to fill out a ballot with our favorite face.  We put our ballot in the voting box.  We then tallied our scores to find our favorite face.

We counted the seeds (there was 230 seeds), we counted the ribs (13 ribs), we measured the height (11 cubes).  Mrs. Saunderson is going to cook the seeds tonight and let us try them tomorrow.

Did you know that a pumpkin FLOATS?  It was amazing that a big pumpkin could float.

October 27, 2015

Scavenger Hunt

We had a scavenger hunt. We were learning how to read a map.  If we read the map correctly, we found a letter.  We had to go to the office, the gym, the library, a classroom!  We did not get lost!  The letters spelled the word BELONG.  We belong to our school group!

We made witch's legs for a pattern.

We have a note about Halloween activities on Friday.  Please return dental hygienist note.

October 26, 2015

Pumpkins and witch fingers!

We are learning about patterns.  Patterns repeat over and over and over.  A pattern could be a heart, square, heart, square.  Patterns could be in color.  Patterns are important.

We are learning about pumpkins.  Today we used witch's fingers to read every word.  We use a witch finger and then we won't get mixed up when looking at words.  The witch fingers are plastic!

A note about the dental hygienist and yearbook went home today.

Applesauce!

Ready to make #applesauce. #apple #autumn
Today, we made applesauce.  First, you need to wash the apples.  Then you peel the apples.  After, we all got to chop up apples!  We put them in pot and added cinnamon and sugar.  It cooked all day.  It smelled good.

We tried the applesauce and 12 people loved the applesauce.  4 people did not like it.  Thanks to Eloise's mom for bringing the apples.  We have the recipe in our Take Home Folder.

More bats and a new Prime Minister!

We learned that a bat can eat 600 mosquitoes in one hour.  We cut out 600 bugs!  It took a long time.  Bats are real. They use echolocation to find bugs.  Bats are awake at night that means they are nocturnal. Bats have sharp teeth.  Some bats have their own place to hunt.  Bats live in a roost and the roost could be in a cave.

Trace told us that Justin Trudeau is our new Prime Minister.  We live in the province of Alberta.  Alberta is in the country of Canada.

PICTURE ORDERS ARE DUE MONDAY!

October 16, 2015

It's Friday!

Our school pictures came today.  We need to order them by October 26!

Remember to do your Home Reading this weekend!  I need to read for 15 minutes.

We are making Christmas cards for a fundraiser.  Mom and Dad will be able to buy them.  Mrs. Saunderson will tell you about it at Parent-Teacher interviews.

Please sign up for Parent Teacher interviews next week!

October 15, 2015

Vampire Bats

We learned that vampire bats are real!  Vampire bats drink blood but its only animal blood.  They only drink a little bit so the animal doesn't die.  Bats can see in the dark. They used echolocation to hear where their food is. We sang a song about it.  Bats have fingers in their wings.  Vampire bats have sharp teeth, that's how they got their name.

We will have a new Leader of the Week next week.  We went out for recess.  It was cold outside today.  We had gym and we played Snake Island and Super Hero Freeze Tag. We had fun today!

PLEASE remember to sign up for parent teacher interviews next week.  Go to the front page of the school website for the link.

Bats, bats, bats!

We are starting to learn about bats.  We read a book about a bat.  It was a fiction book.  A bat lives in a cave and we call it a roost.  They stay in their roost all day.
