Bar U Ranch

We went to the Bar U Ranch today. There were four stations that we completed. We went to a cookout camp. Mariam told us stories about the past. We pulled artifacts from a bucket. We learned that George Lane was an owner of the Bar U.
We went on a nature walk. There were a lot of trees and a river. We learned that on the ridge, the First Nations put teepees up high until the river slowed down.
We went on a wagon ride. There were steps to get up on the wagon and we did it the cowboy way.  The ladies always go FIRST and gentlemen offer them a hand.  Wagon rides are very slow. People in the past traveled slowly. You can't be loud around the horses, they will get scared.
We went to the cookhouse. There was a kitchen and it had a separate room for the female cook because she didn't want to stay with rough cowboys.  They had an ice house that used ice blocks with big tongs to keep the food cool.

Melt an Ice Cube!

Today we had to melt an ice cube in the fastest time!  We had to roll a dice and follow the instructions. What worked best for some people was dropping it down your shirt because it melted faster when your belly was hot.  Some people thought that dropping the ice cube or using heat works the fastest. Blowing it in our hands would use our hot breath to heat the ice cube.  We think the salt worked because the salt burned the ice cube.  It was a fun activity!

Super Mario Day!

In grade 1 and 2, we had to save Princess Peach! She sent us a video of being stuck in Bowser's castle. We needed to go through 5 different worlds. In the underground world, there were tunnels and we needed to solve math questions and find the answer in the tunnel.  In the water world, we had to build boats out of tin foil and carried marbles and dinosaurs.  In the sky world, we have to read sentences and fill in words that were french and english.  When you found the missing word, we had to jump up and touch it.  In the castle world, we made towers out of cups and papers and tape. In the athletic world, we rode scooters to solve math questions.

Liquids Race

Today we raced oil, syrup and soap against each other to see who was the fastest!  First, we drew 3 circles and labelled them. Next, we had to use a eye dropper and placed 2 drops of every liquid. Last, tilted the paper and raced them down the page.  Syrup won the most races. Oil was a very close winner. Soap did not win many races.

Surface Tension!

How many drops can a penny hold? -Click on the link to check out the video!

Today we used an eye dropper and looked at shape of a water drop.  It was shaped like a hill.  Then we tried to cut it apart with a toothpick! It wouldn't cut apart and it stayed the same shape. We dropped drops on a penny. Someone discovered if you put drops on the maple leaf side, it held more drops.  The penny took about 25 drops to break over the surface and the water fell over the side of the penny. It was more drops than anyone predicted. The size of the water drop grew on top of the penny.

We had Lego club today for Grade 2s at lunch recess. Trickster Devon was in our room helping us plan a story.

The Messy Room!

We did NOT catch that leprechaun again this year! He left us a note that said better luck next year. Paddy O'Flannigan had paint everywhere! He left us some gold coins for a treat. There were footprints all over the room. He wrecked all of our traps that we made to catch him and he hid our shoes all over the classroom.

Ice Inukshuks!

In social studies, we built our own inukshuks. We used coloured ice blocks. We had to spray water to make them stick and add a little snow. Some were different colours and some were different sizes and shapes. We built with Ms Mahan's class and we all cooperated by working together.  We didn't build one inukshuk, we built many inuksuit. Lots of them are colourful and look like a rainbow.  Some are tall and some have no arms.  We worked hard on them.  We hope that people will be KIND and not knock them over.
