Brain Power!

Image result for the power of yet
We are learning that our brains can get stronger by doing hard things or things we cannot do YET! One way to get our brain stronger is to do hard challenges. If we keep trying, it will get easier. We've been trying to work the whole time and building our stamina. We are learning about adding and equals in math.

African Penguin Skype

We skyped with African penguins from the California Academy of Science. We learned that the penguins have sharp tongues - we seen it! It is sharp so that can eat fish and krill. Not all penguins live in cold weather, the African penguins live near the beach.  We learned that a penguin can see through its eye lid so that they can see underwater. They also have 2 kinds of feathers.  One type keeps the penguin warm, the outer feathers keep the water off of them. Those feathers have oil on them. At the Academy of Science, they have a baby penguin pool so the babies can practice their swimming. These penguins can live for 30 years but in the wild, they only live for about 15 years!

Thanks to Jacque from the Academy of Science for hosting! It was a great skype.

Penguins, penguins, penguins!

We are learning about penguins.  We have learned that baby penguins pip out of the egg. There are 17 kinds of penguins. The Fairy penguin is the smallest penguin. The Rockhopper penguin looks like a rock star! All penguins can hop. There is a Chinstrap penguin and a Macaroni penguin. They are called Chinstrap penguins because they have black feathers that look like a chinstrap. The dad penguins hold the egg by his feet. Penguins have webbed feet. We read a book about a real penguin who lost his feathers and needed a wet suit. His name was Pierre. We were watching live penguins on a webcam!

Estimation!

Image result for Pockets for Corduroy
We had to estimate! We had to guess how many pockets we were wearing in our class. We read a story about a teddy bear wanting a pocket. The book was called A Pocket For Corduroy.  We had to put a block in our pockets and then we put them on 10-frames. We had 51 pockets in all. Some people didn't even have pockets.  Some people guessed 69 pockets or 95. One person guessed 50 and another person guessed 48!  They were the closest.
We saw pictures of penguins in the Antarctica. We read a non-fiction book about penguins.
We played with Ms Mahan's class in gym.

Welcome Back!

Image result for penguins
We are writing and learning about penguins.  We did a penguin book walk and looked for facts.  We wrote our ideas on a big piece of paper. We heard a book called Little Lost Penguin from a classmate! We were challenged to make snowflakes and we used hearts and straws. We made a tape snowflakes and painted the background.  When we peeled off the tape, we could see a snowflake. It was very very cold outside at recess.  We went to music and gym. We looked for shapes in magazines.
