The Gingerbread Man broke out!

 The magic experiment

A gingerbread lock box challenge!

The magical experiment worked! Without touching it, the water went up the paper towels and brought water to the other cups.  It even made secondary colours!
Today we did another lock box! We were trying to break out the gingerbread man.  First we read a story and then we scanned a code and the gingerbread man talked to us in a squeaky voice. We had figure out clues in our team and grab a certain colour key. The lock box had a note that said we broke out!  When we opened the locked box, we found out that there was candy the gingerbread man left us. We had so much fun!
We have a Random Acts of Christmas Kindness cup and we made bucket filling cards to school helpers. We will deliver them tomorrow.
We had a new game with the Omnikin ball called Indiana Jones.  We taught the 3/4 class the popcorn game!

A ginormous ball!

The Omnikin ball is GINORMOUS!
A magical experiment!
We are continuing to learn about shapes and colours. We are doing a magic trick to see if water will transfer to another cup without us TOUCHING it.
In gym, we had the Omnikin ball. It is ginormous! We tried pushing the ball with only our hands or our feet and it was so fun. The ball is so big that it ran us over! We were a set of train tracks and the Omnikin ball rolled over us on our tummies.
We got a special note about December and it says we will have Grinch Day.

Transparent and Opaque

We are learning about shapes and we made a Christmas tree out of shapes. We played volleyball in gym today.  In volleyball, we hit the ball back and forth to each other and we volley the ball over our heads. We are still learning about colours and we learned about transparent and opaque.  Transparent means that you can see through it. Opaque means that you cannot see through it.  Transparent things are windows, plastic wrap, glasses.  Opaque things are door, wall, shirts, carpet.

We played Freeze Tag and British Bulldog at gym. We sang some songs in music.

We played Kahoot today using the ipads.  We had to make 10 combinations and we had questions that we had to answer fast like 5+5 and 10+0.

50 days of school

Today is the 50th day of school! We drank root beer floats and wrote about it on root beer float paper. They were yummy.  We dressed up in fifties outfits: our jeans were rolled up, suspenders, white t-shirts, leather jackets, poodle skirts, slicked back hair and combs in our pockets.  We used a 100 chart and counted to 50 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s!  We looked at pictures and sorted them into 50s or today!  TVs, phones and cars looked very different in the 50s.

A Locked Box!

We had to read the map!

The locks wouldn't open without the clue!

The secret codes!

Today we did a locked box which is kind of like an Escape Room.  We read If You Take a Mouse to School AND the mouse left us a note!  The note said the mouse had accidentally put the markers in a locked box.  We had to read clues and use a map to figure out how to unlock the box. We even had to read a secret code from a special pen on the H because it was the furthest north letter alphabet letter that we received in the mail.  We had to read rooms on a map, go look for clues around the school.

It was SO much fun! "It was the best activity EVER"

Highlights of High River

Highlights of High River
We began sharing our Highlights of High River projects! They are fantastic! Some people shared Minecraft buildings, Lego, drawings, posters, pictures and dioramas. We have learned a lot about High River. The Medicine Tree was important to the Blackfoot people. The school is a place for learning. Shepard Park has a park and it has an old house on it. Evelyn's is a good place for ice cream. We live near the mountains.
High River is a great place to live!

We remember!

We had our Remembrance Day assembly.  We recited the poem In Flander's Fields.  We had two soldiers and an RCMP officer join us at the assembly. The poem was written by John McCrae during the war.  Soldiers were hurt on the field and poppies began to grow. Lots of our parents came to watch us. We did amazing!

A reporter told us that our poem may be on SunCountry radio!

Our learning!

Looking at assessment!

Today we were the teachers! We marked some drawings by giving them a 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars.  A 1 star had scribbles, not very much writing, not many colours. A 2-star work had a couple of colours, nice colouring, a little bit of detail.  A 3-star work had lots of colours, wrote some good words on the lines, there was a little bit more detail.  A 4-star work had lots of details, really good work, lots of detail with correct colours,

Pumpkin Explorations!

It floats!!!!!

Skip counting by 10s

Thanks, Mr. T!

We scooped out the seeds and the strings/pulp.  We found out that a pumpkin can FLOAT!  We learned that a pumpkin floats because it was full of air!  We cut out jack o'lanterns.  We lit them up with battery lights. We had lots of parents come to help us!

Mr. T came and read us a story, too!

A Bat Book Walk

Today we did a 'book walk'. We looked through some books at the tables.  They were all about bats. We looked at the pictures and the words. We looked at details and then we wrote facts about bats. We also watched the Magic School Bus Going Batty. We learned that bats use echolocation to see at night to find food. We know that some bats eat bugs or insects, some eat fruit and some drink blood.  They drink water using their tongue. Bats hang upside down to sleep and they fly at night. We know that bats are nocturnal. Bats have sharp teeth to drink blood.
We received an O for owl in our Great Alphabet Exchange!

Patterns, Patterns, Patterns

We are working on patterns.  Blue, red, yellow is a pattern. We can also use letters like AAB, AAB to make a pattern. A pattern repeats over and over. Today, we used an app called geoboards to make a pattern.  It uses elastics to stick to a board. It is a fun app!
We are going to make a haunted house to write about. We rock it in Grade 1!

Be Proactive

Image result for be proactive
We are learning about Habit 1: Be Proactive. It means that we are doing the right thing even when no one is watching and I'm in charge of me.  We watched a video when the escalator broke and the people waited for someone to come and help them. It was funny that they were yelling for help. They should have been proactive and walked up the stairs on their own. I am proactive when I am listening or when I am sharing my toys and games.

The Sense of Sight

Looking and reading Braille books

We learned to read using our fingers! Some people can not see and they are blind. They can use a special alphabet called Braille. Braille has raised bumps for letters. We wrote our names using Braille. Some people even had time to make Braille sight words.  We touched books that were written with Braille. They had lumpy bumps and raised pictures.

A special guest!

A prosthetic leg like Terry Fox!
We had a special visitor today! A student's Poppa came to visit. He had a prosthetic leg which comes off and on.  It reminded us of Terry Fox and his prosthetic leg.   He had to zip off his pants to show us his leg. There was a foot on his leg but it wasn't a real foot. His prosthetic leg bends right over. He can wear flip flops with that foot! He gets to drive with his left foot and he takes off his leg at night. He also had some crutches.

The firemen did a check of our school. We learned a new game with Ms Little in the gym! The TD bank gives EVERY grade one student in Canada a book. I received mine today - let's read it!
